My pear photographs are a nod to the Gothic and Early Renaissancepainters, where fruit was part of an incredibly rich visual language. Each type of fruit carried a different meaning.
The pear represents marital faith but also symbolizes inner peace, in some cultures it symbolizes affection. In christian contexts the pear symbolizes the Virgin and Child, probably because of it’s sweetness. It also bestows wisdom and health.
My affection for pears grew when I started to grow my own pears in the garden, I grow a couple of different varieties. Every pear grows into a different shape and texture. I love that my pear gets a couple of chances in life, firstly in an image that will hold it forever and secondly, in giving me the pleasure of it’s beautiful sweet, juicy, perfumed and buttery texture which melts in your mouth.
